Award-winning Haven for Relaxing and Entertaining
The owners of this modern detached property in Wilmslow, Cheshire wanted a complete redesign of their front and rear gardens to complement the contemporary style of the house. They required the garden to be low maintenance with a strong focus on clean lines, but with plenty of seasonal interest. Most of all they wished to create a tranquil space for both relaxing and entertaining.
The Tranquil Garden has won the BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) National Landscape Award for Design Excellence 2018.
- Distinct seating/entertaining areas to optimise the movement of the sun during the day
- Fire table
- Piece of modern sculpture
- High quality elegant yet robust paving
- Unusual planting with plenty of evergreen structure, coloured foliage and some flowering interest
Matt created two main entertaining areas, one for lunchtime and evening dining with some shade, and one for relaxing (around a fire table) in the evening sun and beyond.
The beautiful light grey paving from Stonemarket connects the front and rear gardens and the same material is used in the steps and plank paving. Cedar screening has been used to divert your eye from the boundary fence in conjunction with yew (Taxus) hedging.
Form and Structure
The structural elements of planting include box (Buxus) hedging and topiary, which are supplemented with flowering shrubs and a small amount of summer flowering herbaceous perennials and grasses.
A stunning modern sculpture by Paul Margetts, framed by box hedging, occupies a corner of the lawn. Matt also sourced a sensual serpentine bench, which sits between two sets of cedar panelling.
