Calm and Relaxation
The owners of this small rear garden of a 1970s property in Cheshire wanted to create a garden that was a calming and relaxing place to be. The focus was on senses: a feast of texture, colour, scent and movement. The design also had to fit around the existing timber deck and the modernist style of the building.
- An oasis of calm
- Easy to look after
The photographs illustrate how the design achieved a balance between modernist hard lines and soft planting. Texture and movement were created through the contrast of soft grasses and rough granite setts. Scented plants in hues of white and purple create a sense of calm. A boulder water feature also brings in movement and the relaxing sound of tricking water.
The Retreat garden won Matt Nichol Garden Design the 2012 Northern Design Awards Garden Designer of the Year.
